Big News for NPs!!!!

October 1st Regulation Update:

NPAO is delighted to inform you that the College of Nurses of Ontario`s regulations for NPs is approved.  The accompanying revised NP Practice Standard is now posted.  The regulation and the amendments to the Nursing Act made by Bill 179, and authorized additional controlled acts is now in effect as of October 1, 2011. Click here to read more on Bill 179.  Click here to read the new NP Practice Standard posted October 1, 2011.

  1. The NP drug list is now discontinued. With the exception of controlled substances, NPs now have the authority to prescribe medication as appropriate for client care.
  2. NPs are now able to dispense, sell and compound medication in specified circumstances (for example, when the client does not have reasonable access to a pharmacy).
  3. NPs are now able to set and cast fractures in specified circumstances (for example, closed and un-displaced stable fractures).
  4. NPs are now able to give client care orders to RNs and RPNs for procedures that they previously could not. For example, venipuncture to obtain blood samples.

This amendment does not affect the lists of X-rays and ultrasounds that continue to govern clinical aspects of NP practice.  A revised Nurse Practitioner practice standard is now available on the College of Nurses web site.  These practice changes will further enable Public Hospital Acts regulation changes related to treatment and discharge care as of July 1, 2011 and admission potential in July 2012.
