In the summer of 2010, the Ministry consulted with stakeholders on the issue of NPs being granted authority to admit, transfer or discharge patients.

Bill 179, Regulated Health Professions Statute Law Amendment Act

This Bill, which received Royal Assent December 15, 2009, proposes significant changes to the scope of practice for 16 regulated health professionals. Of particular importance for nurse practitioners is the removal of many legislative and regulatory barriers that limit NP practice.

Advice to Minister Caplan and Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council – RN(EC) Scope of Practice

In June 2007, then Minister George Smitherman asked HPRAC to provide advice on a number of matters impacting the regulation of health professions in Ontario. For nurse practitioners, two referrals were of particular interest: the scope of practice of registered nurses in the extended class and the review of regulations concerning non-physician professions who prescribe and/or use drugs in the course of their practice.  NPAO provided advice to the HPRAC during the consultation process and to Minister Caplan on the final report from HPRAC.
