October 2 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm

Transgender men and non-binary people often encounter barriers when access support for chestfeeding or lactation following the birth of their baby. Several factors have been identified as barriers, with the main factors being engagement with healthcare practitioners who do not provide gender-affirming care. Despite these barriers, engaging in supportive environment facilitates chestfeeding and lactation. This qualitative descriptive study explored the experiences of eight trans men and non-binary people as well as five practitioners who supported them. Themes that emerged helped to understand the experiences of transgender men and non-binary people and lead to the creation of an inforgraphic with care recommendations for practitioners.

This presentation will share the results of a qualitative study exploring the experiences of transgender men and non-binary people with chestfeeding and lactation. Results of the study are presented in themes which emerged from the results. Further analysis led to the development of care recommendations for practitioners to support caring for this patient population.
