CNO Update Regarding Opioid Prescribing

NPAO would like to make members aware of a recent update to the federal Food and Drug Regulation which may impact your practice.

As of October 23, 2018, all nurses dispensing a Class A opioid are required to apply a warning sticker to the prescription bottle and provide a patient handout. The sticker and handout are not required if a prescription is being provided to the patient. The new regulation only applies to the dispensing of an opioid directly to the patient.

For further information, including the required warning sticker and patient handout, please see the College of Nurses of Ontario website – http://www.cno.org/en/news/2018/august-2018/new-requirements-for-dispensing-opioids/

Please share this information with your colleagues.
