NPAO Commends Homeless Health Peel for its Nurse-led Primary Care Initiative

TORONTO (March 28, 2024)

The Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario (NPAO) commends Homeless Health Peel (HHP) for its success in securing funding from the Government of Ontario to support a nurse-led primary care model for those at risk of and experiencing homelessness in the Region of Peel.

The funding, totaling over $1.6 million, will build on HHP’s existing initiatives that support vulnerable individuals in the region by providing nurse-led primary and specialist care. During the COVID-19 pandemic, HHP introduced an innovative hub-and-spoke model of care where nurses and nurse practitioners delivered care from a hub at the Dundas Medical Shelter in addition to off-site community partner healthcare centres.

This initiative exemplifies the innovative models of care that must be introduced in order to serve the needs of Ontarians. It also demonstrates the critical role that nurse practitioners can and must play in delivering innovative, quality care. We look forward to continuing to work with the provincial government, regional health bodies, and community organizations to bridge gaps in Ontario’s healthcare
system.
