NPAO Welcomes the Announcement of the Nursing Retention Toolkit

TORONTO (March 4, 2024) –  The Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario (NPAO) is pleased to hear that the federal government has introduced the Nursing Retention Toolkit: Improving the Working Lives of Nurses in Canada. This is an important step towards addressing the labour pressures currently facing nurses in Ontario, and supports their ability to provide the high-quality healthcare that Canadians deserve.

“Support for healthcare workers means support for the health and well-being of Canadians,” says Dr. Michelle Acorn, CEO of NPAO. “We know firsthand the barriers that healthcare workers and nurse practitioners face, and support initiatives that work to improve working conditions, enable professional development, and introduce innovative modes of healthcare delivery.”

The Toolkit announced today outlines eight themes to improve retention: flexible and balanced ways of working; organizational mental health and wellness supports; professional development and mentorship; reduced administrative burden; strong management and communication; clinical governance and infrastructure; inspired leadership; and safe staffing practices.

“We look forward to seeing how these themes are put into practice in Ontario’s healthcare system, and welcome opportunities to be engaged in the implementation process.” says Dr. Acorn. “Nurse practitioners are poised and ready to support the health and well-being of Canadians”

NPAO is committed to continuing to collaborate with the provincial government to ensure timely, high-quality healthcare for all.
