Substance-Related Care: Three Medications Every Primary Care Provider Should Know

Objectives

1. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify and initiate naltrexone and acamprosate for alcohol use disorder

2. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify opportunities to support patients with problematic opioid use and manage buprenorphine prescriptions

3. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify community resources to assist patients with substance-related care such as Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) clinics.

Speaker:

Katie Dunham BSc Hons BScN MN NP-PHC is a primary care nurse practitioner with a background in global humanitarian aid, emergency nursing, primary-care, rapid access addiction medicine, withdrawal management in a community based live-in setting, and virtual addictions care through the Digital Front Door platform.  She acts as Nurse Practitioner Lead for Stonehenge Therapeutic Community Rapid Access Addiction Medicine and is faculty at the University of Toronto Bloomberg School of Nursing.  She also acts as the Nursing Educator for META:PHI, an Ontario-based organization that providers mentoring, education, and clinical tools to those working in the field of addictions.  Here she coordinates the NP listserv, and monthly Dialogue call. She is passionate about expanding access to substance-related care through education, and optimizing existing care pathways through community partnerships.
