Medical Assistance in Dying Protocol Examples

Jurisdictions in Canada and in the United States have developed standardized sample drug protocols for the purpose of MAiD. Organizations in Ontario such as hospitals and individual practitioners like physicians and NPs have adapted sample protocols to facilitate MAiD. In this section, NPAO provides an example of the MAiD drug protocol used in Alberta. NPAO also provides an example of a protocol developed by an individual NP.

NPs may wish to consult with other health care professionals in relation to drug protocols including NPs, physicians and pharmacists when participating in MAiD. Further, NPs are encouraged to collaborate with other health professionals once they are aware that a patient has initiated a request for MAiD.

NPs are reminded that they must use their clinical and profession judgement and follow federal and provincial laws for MAiD and professional practice requirements as set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
