Concussion – How to Manage and Return to Activity

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe key tenants of concussion management principles across the continuum of acute, post-acute and chronic timeframes
• Describe key tenants of concussion symptom management for multiple concussions and prolonged symptoms
• Name the components of current evidence-based concussion education for patients and know where to source this information
• Name the typical difficulties associated with return to work
• Describe ways to combat and/or accommodate the difficulties
Speakers: Dr. Robin Green and Dr. McKyla McIntyre
Dr. Robin Green is a Canada Research Chair (II) in traumatic brain injury and a Senior Scientist in the cognitive neurosciences at Toronto Rehab and scientist at the KITE Research Institute at University Health Network. Dr. Green completed her PhD at Cambridge University, a post-doctoral fellowship at St. Thomas’ and Guys Hospital, London, England, and her clinical training in neuropsychology at the University Health Network in Toronto. Dr. Green has worked at Toronto Rehab for most of her career. She is currently the head of the Brain Discovery and Recovery Team, and she co-leads the Schroeder Brain Institute with four other scientists. She recently founded a provincial research centre for people with enduring effects of brain injuries/concussion. The centre provides remotely delivered clinical care to patients across Ontario, including Northern Ontario, through their participation in research. The centre is also collaborating with partners in other provinces to create a broader network, and seeks to establish international links. The interventions that are delivered and tested focus on enhancing cognitive and mood function, and improving brain health, with a particular focus on enhancing neurogenesis in the hippocampi. Dr. Green is a Co-Lead for ECHO Ontario Concussion at UHN.
Dr. McKyla McIntyre is a Physiatrist at UHN’s Brain and Spinal Cord Program at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, Clinician Teacher at University of Toronto and the University of Toronto PM&R Wellness Lead. She is originally from Victoria, BC, where she completed secondary school. She completed undergraduate studies at Western University in Medical Sciences (specialization in Physiology). Her medical degree was completed at the University of British Columbia (2011-2015). While in medical school, she completed an education outreach project in rural Uganda in 2012 with UBC’s Global Health Initiative. More recently, she was involved in the 19th NepalAbility education project in Tansen and Pokhara, Nepal. Dr. McIntyre is a Co-Lead for ECHO Ontario Concussion at UHN.
