Media Relations 101

Description: Explore how to communicate with the media effectively and successfully. Review practical tips anyone can deploy in a media interview or meeting setting. Discuss how to prepare for an interview, develop key messaging and how to overcome difficult questions.

Speakers:

Jayme Wilson, Manager, Government & Public Relations. Impact

Jayme is an experienced communicator with a background in federal politics. She has worked as a Parliamentary Assistant for a senior Cabinet Minister supporting media and press relations. She has also run many successful national and regional media campaigns on behalf of a diverse group of clients.

Jayme is well-versed in working with major media to pitch stories, develop compelling narratives, and create communications materials. She has led media strategies across the country, coordinating key media interviews on national networks and leading clients’ media training.

Jayme has also organized some of the most successful in-person and hybrid lobby events in Ottawa and Ontario during the pandemic and return to in-person events. She was recently recognized by the Hill Times for organizing the most active lobby presence for any organization in early 2022.

Jayme holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Studies and History from Queen’s University and a Public Relations Graduate Certificate, with a specialization in Media Relations, from Humber College.

Thomas Gendron, Director, Government Relations & Strategy, Impact

Thomas brings years of experience in Canadian politics, formerly working as a policy, outreach and communications specialist. Thomas has worked on various provincial and federal campaigns since 2006, he brings a proven track record of successful engagement and advocacy strategies. He brings experience utilizing local, provincial, and national media to advance narratives and improve brand image for both elected officials and clients across a diverse array of industry sectors.

Thomas utilizes many tools to drive successful media campaigns that includes op-eds, interviews, media and press releases, press conferences, and direct interaction with key reporters to curate an effective narrative delivered to the public. Thomas’ media campaigns have successfully driven legislative and policy change in parliament and other targeted regions.

Thomas holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Ethics, Society & Law, Criminology, and a minor in Political Science.
