Virtual Hallway: How NPs utilize quick and timely specialist advice into their care plans

December 14, 2022 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm

Using Virtual Hallway, Nurse Practitioners quickly and easily book a date and a time to receive a documented phone consult from the specialist of their choosing.

In the last year, hundreds of NPs in Ontario and Nova Scotia have used Virtual Hallway to connect with a specialist. Specialists on Virtual Hallway input their own availability on the platform, and are compensated through OHIP. The consults on Virtual Hallway are friendly, educational, and effective in assisting with a patient’s care.

Data gathered by Nova Scotia Health indicates that 84% of the consults booked on Virtual Hallway result in the PCP to be able to provide specialist guided care in their community clinic, rather than referring that patient for an in-person specialist consult.

We hope you will join us on Dec. 14th as we welcome psychiatrist and co-founder, Dr. Luke Napier, as well as Nurse Practitioners Erin Sarrazin and Sarah Colgan to speak about their experience and best practices in utilizing Virtual Hallway.

Speakers:

Dr. Luke Napier MD, FRCPC (Psychiatrist) – Co-founder, Virtual Hallway.

Dr. Napier attended Dalhousie University for undergraduate studies and medical school, and then completed psychiatry residency training in New York (Beth Israel), where he was chief resident. He has been practicing psychiatry since 1990 and has held various clinical and academic roles. For the past 10 years, his private practice in Halifax has been focused on the care of Canadian Forces and RCMP members and veterans. A proud Newfoundlander, he is very happy to be part of the evolution of veteran’s care services in the Atlantic region, as the new medical director for the Atlantic Centre for Trauma.

Sarah Colgan, Nurse Practitioner.

Sarah is a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner with Nova Scotia Health. She has a family practice at a collaborative clinic in Dartmouth, NS. Sarah received her undergraduate degree in Nursing from the University of New Brunswick in 2007, and practiced as an RN in the Emergency Department until she completed her Masters of Nursing- Nurse Practitioner program at Dalhousie University in 2014.

Erin Sarrazin, Nurse Practitioner.

Erin is entering her 8th year as a Nurse Practitioner, and my 20th of nursing. She graduated with a BScN from Dalhousie University and then completed a MN in Health Policy from MUN before going on to do a post Master certificate to obtain my NP from Dalhousie.

Erin’s initial NP practice was as a civilian contractor with DND in Alberta and Ontario performing Primary Care, Urgent Care and Occupational assessments. She then returned home to Nova Scotia in 2019 to practice in primary care in Eastern Passage.

Erin currently works alone in her clinic but is affiliated with another clinic a few kilometers away, and one day a week doing IUS and Nexplanon insertions in a contraceptive clinic that she established, receiving referrals from the surrounding communities for this service. Erin is an IUS Instructor with the SOGC and takes preceptees at this clinic. She has also participated as a Medical Volunteer at the Halifax Canada Games and the Invictus Games in Toronto, and is a first aid instructor and patroller with the Canadian Ski Patrol.
