NPAO Statement on Bill 124
NPAO Statement on Bill 124
02.14.24
The Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario (NPAO) welcomes and supports the Ontario government’s move to repeal Bill 124 in the wake of the Appeal Court’s ruling that deemed the law unconstitutional. This bill, which enforces a one percent annual wage cap on public sector workers, including Nurse Practitioners, has been both unnecessary and harmful. NPAO acknowledges the immense negative impact that Bill 124 has had on nurse practitioners and the broader healthcare system.
Nurse practitioners continuously play a vital role in delivering high-quality, accessible healthcare services to Ontarians across various settings. The constraints imposed by Bill 124 not only hindered the ability of NPs to negotiate fair compensation but also endangered patient care by contributing to workforce shortages and worsening existing challenges.
The repeal of Bill 124 indicates a positive step towards addressing systemic issues that have affected the nursing profession, including retention and recruitment challenges. NPAO is pleased with the recognition of workers’ constitutional rights and the affirmation of principles such as fair compensation and collective bargaining. The need remains for ongoing collaboration between healthcare stakeholders, policymakers, and workers to ensure sustainable, equitable practices that prioritize the well-being of both healthcare workers and the patients they serve.
Repealing Bill 124 is a significant win for all those in collective efforts to support a thriving healthcare workforce in Ontario and should be recognized as such. NPAO remains committed to advocating for the interests of nurse practitioners and promoting policies that uphold the health of all Ontarians.
