NPAO Welcomes the Expansion of Nurse-Led Outreach Teams in Ontario

TORONTO (March 18, 2024) – The Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario (NPAO) applauds the Ontario government’s expansion of nurse-led outreach teams, fully utilizing the expertise that Nurse Practitioners (NPs) can lend in long-term care. This initiative signals a shift towards team-based, patient-centered care that will improve health outcomes and quality of life for Ontarians in long-term care.

“NPAO is pleased to see the expansion of nurse-led outreach teams in Ontario”, says Michelle Acorn, CEO of NPAO. “This is a necessary step in adapting the delivery of healthcare in the province to meet the needs of Ontarians, including seniors in long-term care settings.”

Nurse Practitioner-led outreach teams are extending crucial services to long-term care residents. Equipped with the ability to diagnose and prescribe, NPs ensure residents receive timely interventions and tailored treatments, where and when they need it. Their work is crucial in mitigating worst-case health outcomes and thus transfers to emergency care, and supports seniors to live at home according to their individual healthcare plans.

“We look forward to working with the provincial government and other health practitioners to ensure that Ontarians are able to access timely, quality care, no matter their stage of life”, says Acorn. “As Nurse Practitioners, we see each day the critical impacts that our work has, and are dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of seniors across the province.”

This expansion reflects the government’s commitment to prioritizing seniors’ well-being while modernizing practices in long-term care, and Ontario’s wider healthcare system. NPAO remains committed to working with the provincial government and other healthcare professionals to innovate healthcare. By harnessing the full potential of Nurse Practitioners, Ontario can deliver quality care and support to seniors.
